Taupo was the venue for the Spectacular races with Red Devil Racing represented by Noel Howe, Stephen Jones, Geoff Long, Rob Chappell on their trusty 3TA Triumphs and Matt Hayward on his 150.
The day was extremely hot and hard work for the spectators watching but they were there to the very end.
The heat simmered of the tarseal and the roar of thunder exploded in the air as the Classic motorcycles moved out to the start line.
This race saw Ross Graham and Colin Tate racing to the front on the bigger engines usually seen in the open modified class. Further back in the field Noel Howe and Geoff Long on their Triumph 3TA's battled it out with Geoff Long pushing hard and taking the lead from Noel Howe.
Noel and Geoff came in literally pouring with perspiration, Geoff with a grin from ear to ear at having finally thrown those demons off his shoulders that he had been carrying around for nearly a year now. Noel and Jimmy had verbal comments something like "That bloody Ting!!!" More work in the shed goes Pat.
Further back in the field Rob Chappell had been racing hard up against Nortons and BSAs and rest he so badly needed he had not a hope in hell of getting it. Stephen Jones was our last Red devil in this race but even though he may have been at the back with out the usual cohords to race against he put a lot of effort into riding smoother and putting all the things he has learned in the past year together. Looking back on the past twelve months he has improved tremendously.
Race two Noel made sure he was off and away from Geoff who made a couple of little mistakes through adrenalin pumping through the veins and missed a gear and went wide allowing Noel to move out of his reach.
Matt Hayward was our other representative riding his 150. He was in a big field of 40+ riders, something he hasn't experienced before and he picked them off moving through the field until he got to riders of similar speed and moved backwards and forwards as he diced amongst them finishing in the middle of the pack.
Next up is the Modern Team heading down to the South Island on 4th of january 2009 for three and a half weeks of racing with the Nationals on, then back to pukekohe for the Classic festival.
