The last three winter rounds have had some highs and lows for the boys. First up Sam Smith crashed out whilst chasing Nick Cole and broke his wrist. This resulted in Sam having to have a plate put into his wrist. The next meeting Nick Cole hoped to take advantage of the fact Sam wasn’t there and grab the extra points advantage. This was not to be as the weather was atrocious with water pouring across the track. Nick was one of the first riders out onto the track and unfortunately took the lead and ended up aquaplaning the bike thus finishing the day for him. Adam went out for the first race but there was carnage every where with riders coming off in the wet including Jamie Gallway. Eventually the meeting was called off with no points allocated. This left Nick in the lead for both Superbike and Supersport classes. The next month saw Nick left at home due to a bad flu virus that was going around the Waikato. Sam was back with a vengence but hadn’t counted on Adam Chambers and Jamie coming to the front of the field and pushing hard the riders who are normally up the front. Adam shone and there was soon a battle going on with the first five riders right to the end. Sloan and Johnny Burkhart usually manage to push Sam to the limit but this time it was Jamie Galway and then Adam Chambers doing the pushing. James Mckay was back out again this time on his 125GP Honda. James did not find the 600 to his liking and decided to show the class he has riding the 125 against the Motard class. He showed the field a clean pair of heels that day. Matt Hayward was out in the 150 class and he has been listening to the advice of the older riders and is now putting the lessons into practice and I mistakenly offered that if he went faster it would be Subway on the way home.(Matts favourite) He left it to the last race of the day and the second to last lap, just when I thought I was in for a cheap round. October saw us back for the final round of the winter series and all the guys were full of beans and loads of cheeky comments were flying.

First up was Adam, Nick, Sam and Jamie, this was going to be exciting with all four in the front two rows. Nick was off to a flying start with Sloan Frost, Adam,Jamie and Johnny in the front. Sams start wasn’t his usual bull at a gate. Well this was a race where you had to keep your eyes peeled on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th positions as this saw a change with every lap.

Nick was well ahead in the lead when he came out of the first corner and high sided the bike. This saw the race red flagged and Nick in the ambulance with a suspected broken foot. (He refused to go to hospital and two weeks later it is still purple). He got around for the rest of the day with his leg on the handlebars of the pushbike and pedalling with one foot. Next out saw James lapping the field once again and grinning that cheeky smile of his. He rode the bike to the very end with the very confident style that he has. He admitted after that he wanted to show the Motards a thing or two. Matt on his 150 was nervous after looking at Nicks foot but he still went out and was rapt when he came in to find he had several riders finish behind him and now he can slide better across the seat. He was off the bike and over to watch the next races to see what more he could pick up. The next race out for Adam, Sam and Jamie was as good as the first with five riders battling it out. Adam has certainly come forward with massive leaps in his riding and seems to be suited for this class giving Jamie, Sloan, Johnny and Sam a run for their money. The guys were banging against each other going into the turns and ducking and diving around each other which had the spectators cheering them on. Adam goes into turn one banging fairings with Johnny and we breathe a sigh of relief when they make it through the corner only to see Jamie sideways locked up in the corner with black smoke pouring off his tyres. He gets chucked off in exactly the same spot as Nick did and his bike flies out from under him hitting Adam, Adam saved it into the corner and then the bike came back and hit him again putting Adam on his bum. (Can’t print what Jamie said when he came to and saw Adam looking down at him). Jamie came over at the end of the day to say sorry and he too had refused to go to the doctor so the boys offered to make it worth his while which brought loads of laughter and as punishment Adam offered him a Tui beer. Jamie has since found out he had cracked a bone in the front of his leg. No plaster for him though as he wanted to race at the TT for the Classic Register. Sam went on to win the Supersport class. For Sale - Two Kawasaki fuel tanks mangled but have great race history to tell. Matt was the final race of the day and he came in exhausted from trying so hard. He looked at his time sheet and was really gutted to see he hadn’t gone any faster according to the sheet. We looked at the sheet and then pointed out to him the fact that the faster riders hadn’t either so it shows that when you are mixing it up with other riders you can slow down the pace with out realising. He had improved considerably from the first race and looked a lot smoother so we were pleased with him.
