Invercargill Round Three NZ National Superbikes PDF Print E-mail

Qualifying saw Nick 3rd behind Sloan Frost and John Ross with a gap of 0.196 A blanket could be put over the first nine guys as they were all in the 58 to 59 second margin.

The Superbikes are given a 5 minute call up then the announcer says “we are declaring the meeting wet.”  Scrub in goes well and then race one lines up. I am down on the pit wall with Ray holding the lap board when we see Ryan Hampton come off on the last corner leading onto the start finish straight. The red flag goes out like a shot even though Ryan and his bike were well clear. This is on lap five and half points are awarded going back a lap.So it is Stroud, Hampton,Ross Frost, Smith, Cole , Bugden, Shirriffs etc… The race is restarted and Bugden and Frost are off with a flying start leading away from the pack. This leaves Ross, Cole and Stroud fighting for third place with Nick managing to get past and pull out from them catching up and taking third 0.770 behind.

Race Two for Superbikes is called up and we still have the shock out, tyres changed and warmers on but no Robert yet to put the front forks back together. He arrives just as the 1 minute call is done and the sweat was dripping from his brow as he out in new springs etc and as Daniel #2 said “You’re bloody mad, 11 seconds, You’re bloody mad!!!!”  Out goes Nick calm looking and confident in Roberts work, lines up at the start and bugger me he gets a perfect start. I can’t look but Karl Morgan tells me he’s in the front group. They come past and he is about 5th I think and he moves forward passing Ryan Hampton and John Ross. I hear the commentator getting excited but couldn’t hear his words. This commentator gets excited when there is a great manoeuvre or somebody has crashed. I look up at the guys on top of the bus and Ray says “Don’t look, those guys will put you off”. Sure enough Daniel #2 had his hands over his face. Fortunately Karl once again came to my rescue by getting up on the railings and told me Nick was in first. Wooh Hooo… Around the bend they come with Nick being chased by Sloan Frost and further back was Ray Clee. This went on for a few laps but felt like a hundred for me down in pit lane. Nick manages to pull away from Sloan who finished in 2nd 2.290 behind with Ray Clee in 3rd. He also lapped Andrew Stroud twice but that was because he had made a wrong choice of tyres and had gone out on slicks on a wet track gambling that it would dry out.
